In a surprise to absolutely no one, Marvel’s newest movie Eternals dominated the weekend box office, bringing in $71 million in the U.S. and $161 million total around the world. That’s very high for these cursed pandemic times, and pretty good regardless.

Eternals is the worst reviewed movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far, and it’s success out of the gate is a nice reminder that what critics say doesn’t really matter. You think a bunch of bad reviews will stop the juggernaut that is the MCU? Feh. That said, if audiences don’t like Eternals after seeing it, it could depress hype for the next Marvel movie. We’ll see how it shakes out.

DuneNo Time to Die and Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage hold on

Eternals was the only clear winner this weekend. Dune, which has been out of a couple of weeks now, made $7.6 domestically, while James Bond flick No Time To Die made $6 million and Venom: Let There Be Carnage $4. That brings their worldwide box office totals to $330 million, $424 million and $667 million respectively. Warner Bros. is surely hoping that the recently greenlit Dune: Part 2 will raise the franchise’s fortunes now that people are more familiar with it.
