John Oliver: “No one gives a sh*t” about Avatar sequels
By Dan Selcke
After over a decade out of the conversation, does the world still want an Avatar sequel? What about FOUR Avatar sequels?
Avatar, James Cameron’s movie about blue aliens and the human beings who love them, came out in 2009, and went on to become the highest grossing movie in history. The franchise, if you could call it that back then, slumbered for over a decade, and is now coming back with the vengeance. Avatar 2 is due out in theaters next year, with Avatars 3, 4 and 5 due out every other year after that.
Yes, Cameron is making four new movies set on the world of Pandora, over 10 years after the original debuted. What inspired this explosion of content? Well, he hasn’t said, but I’d guess that it’s a combination of: 1) The Marvel Cinematic Universe showing how profitable it is to have a universe of movies for people to spend money on, and; 2) Studios trying to lure folks to their new streaming services with exclusive content. Oh, and because the creators want to make great art; can’t forget that.
But Avatar also seemed like kind of a strange choice for this treatment, since it’s been so long and the movie never seemed to inspire the sort of passion in fans that something like Marvel did, however much money it made. Comedican John Oliver said the quiet part out loud on last night’s new episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, when he compared the lack of progress on Avatar sequels to lack of progress since a 2009 climate change conference:
"There are things it’s ok to take a decade on and not deliver on: the ‘Avatar’ sequels, for instance. Take your time on those, James Cameron. No one gives a shit…I will give anyone in this audience $1,000 right now if they remember either of these characters’ names."
The characters in question were Jake Sully and Neytiri, played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana respectively, although I have to look that up. I think I remembered the guy’s name more or less accurately and I knew that Saldana’s character’s name started with an “N.” But point taken.
Are you excited for the Avatar sequels? We can see whether the world wants more when Avatar 2 comes out on December 16, 2022.
