Sci-fi fans everywhere breathed a sigh of relief after Dune: Part 1 hit theaters late last month. First, they were glad the movie was good. A lot of people have tried to adapt Frank Herbert’s classic novel over the years and it’s never quite worked out. Second, they were happy the movie did well enough for Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel, since the movie only adapts the first half of the book. We wanna see the whole story!
And now, we know when director Denis Villeneuve will get to work on Dune: Part 2. This comes from journalist Josh Encinias, who was at a screening of Dune that included a Q&A with producer Mary Parent, who confirmed that shooting will start up again on July 18, 2022.
Ugh, filming in the summer in the desert. Everybody buy huge water bottles.
Dune: Part Two release date
Dune: Part Two will reunite the impressive cast from the first movie, which includes Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, and many more. Of course, if you saw the first film you know that not all the characters made it, but we’ll try to avoid too many spoilers here.
It’s great to know that Villeneuve will at least get to finish the story of Dune. And if he has his way, he’ll go on to adapt the second book in Herbert’s series, Dune Messiah. And there are more books beyond that if anyone is interested. Given that Warner Bros. is looking at this like a franchise — they’re already making an HBO Max show called Dune: The Sisterhood — I’m betting someone will be.
Dune: Part Two is scheduled to come out in theaters (and probably only in theaters this time) on October 20, 2023.
