The CW’s Supernatural has been over for almost a year now, with the final episode airing back on November 19, 2020. That’s a short amount of time compared to the incredible 15 years it was on television. And after the show’s finale, it seemed like that would be all we got from Sam, Dean, and the rest of the gang.
But now, one CW exec seems to think otherwise. “If the boys want to come back, I’m always open to do some more,” The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz told The Hollywood Reporter, referring to stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki. The CEO also seemed to be open to bringing back One Tree Hill, which ran from 2003-2013.
Is Supernatural coming back to The CW?
Currently, there is still another Supernatural series in the works. Back in June, it was revealed that Jensen and Danneel Ackles were working on a Supernatural prequel series called The Winchesters. Jensen would return as the narrator of the story, and the series would focus on how Winchester parents John and Mary met. That announcement caused a bit of contention between Ackles and Padalecki had no idea that the Ackles were working on the series. But eventually, Padalecki revealed that he had spoken with Jensen and they were able to clear the air.
But what about a potential revival of the original series? Well, that seems like it’s something that likely won’t be revisited for some time, for many reasons, the biggest being that the show was simply on for quite a long time. And really, there’s only so many times the characters can die, go to hell, escape, and do it all over again.
Fifteen years is a long time for a series to run. And keep in mind that Supernatural didn’t start up during the streaming days, when each season of a new show is only 8 to ten episodes long. Pretty much every season of Supernatural ran for about 20 episodes. And there ended up being 327 episodes by the time the series came to a close.
So that’s plenty of Sam, Dean and Cas to go around. But if they ever did want to bring back Padalecki, Ackles, and even Misha Collins, I could see an hour-long special or miniseries being a good idea. (Jensen Ackles even said he would be down for something like that sometime down the road.) That way, these wayward sons get to carry on one more time, but they don’t necessarily have to commit to a full season.
