Kit Harington compares Longclaw to his Eternals blade
By Dan Selcke
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Marvel’s Eternals, playing in theaters now
As Jon Snow on Game of Thrones, Kit Harington knew his way around a sword. One sword in particular: Longclaw, the Valyrian steel blade gifted to him near the start of the series by Lord Commander Jeor Mormont that he kept forever after.
And it seems he just can’t get away from sharp pointy sticks. He plays Dane Whitman in Eternals, Marvel’s newest tentpole blockbuster. For most of the movie, Dane is just an ordinary guy trying to manage his job at London’s Natural History Museum with dating his immortal god of a girlfriend Sersi. But in a post-credits scene, we see him toy with the idea of picking up the Ebony Blade, a cursed sword that Dane wields in the comics as the superhero Black Knight.
We don’t actually see Dane pick up the sword in Eternals, partly because the voice of Blade (Mahershala Ali) cautions him against it. But you’ll be happy to know that Harington himself did get to play with it. “Yeah. I mean, I did pick it up, yeah,” he told Cinema Blend. “If I see a sword, I have to like swing it about. That’s kind of a rule I have. So yeah, I did.” Completely understandable.
And how does the Ebony Blade handle compared to Longclaw? “Lighter,” Harington said, “just lighter and a bit smaller.”
Where will Dane Whitman appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe next?
Obviously, Eternals is teeing up Dane Whitman for more adventures, although we don’t yet know what form they’ll take. He’s gonna pick up that sword; I guarantee that much.
Given that Blade talked to him, it seems natural that Dane could turn up in Mahershala Ali’s first Blade movie, which doesn’t have a release date yet. Or perhaps he’ll get his own Disney+ series. With Marvel getting more fluid with its characters, you never can tell.
