Some Game of Thrones cast members — your Emilia Clarkes, your Kit Haringtons — get talked about a lot in the media. Others, like Rory McCann (Sandor “the Hound” Clegane) keep a lower profile, so it’s great to hear from Deadline that he’s been cast as the title character in an upcoming adaptation of the D.C.I. Daley books by Denzil Meyrick.

The show, which comes from Ocean Independent, will run for eight episodes. It stars McCann as a detective from Kinloch, Scotland who’s risen through the ranks (DCI stands for detective chief inspector). He’s now charged with investigating serious crimes on craggy coasts and in close-knit communities far from city centers.

Meyrick, who was a police officer, is on board to executive produce. “To have the opportunity to be part of this innovative, experienced and talented team is a dream come true,” he said in a statement. “It will be fabulous, and not a little nail-biting, to see my characters brought to life on the small screen by such creative and highly regarded professionals. To say that this is exciting doesn’t do it justice.”

Anthony Neilson will direct the series. He had a statement too: “These stories are much more than typical whodunnits and the whole team is committed to delivering a complex, compelling, and accessible series that will stand to comparison with the best adult dramas from Europe and the US.”

The Hound from Game of Thrones gets his own detective show

It’s cool to see McCann get a starring role in something. He was incredibly charismatic on Game of Thrones but wasn’t quite as high-profile as some of the other cast members. I doubt he’ll have any problems playing a grizzled detective.

There’s no release date for the D.C.I. Daley show as of yet.
