Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is all about the chaos that can ensue when the multiversal floodgates are opened, exploding the infinite possibilities and dangers of messing around in alternate realities. And while that sounds super fun, the production of the movie itself has also been rife with madness, so much that six weeks of “significant” reshoots are now underway!

Reshoots are a regular occurrence in Hollywood. However, what makes Doctor Strange 2 different is just how many reshoots are happening. “They’re here until the end of the year. That’s like a whole other movie,” one source told The Hollywood Reporter.

That said, another insider added that pretty much all Marvel movies go through this process. “Even while in the middle of production, Marvel is scheduling you for more shooting,” they said.

Moreover, Multiverse of Madness isn’t even the biggest reshoot project the MCU has undertaken. “We’ve had bigger reshoots on other MCU movies,” said the insider.

Filming on Doctor Strange 2 began in the U.K. in November 2020 and was paused in January 2021 before finally wrapping in the spring. Perhaps in anticipation of these huge reshoots, the release date was recently been pushed back, from March 25, 2022 to May 6, 2022. Although possible, it’s unlikely that it will be shifted again.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has so far endured a long and twisty production. For instance, back in 2020, original director Scott Derrickson withdrew from the project due to creative differences. This ultimately led to Spider-Man veteran Sam Raimi to helm the flick.

Benedict Cumberbatch is confident Doctor Strange 2 will be “something special”

It’s been a pretty busy year for star Benedict Cumberbatch, who has not only been filming Doctor Strange 2 but also has a big role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. He’s also in the upcoming The Power of the Dog on Netflix and The Electrical Life of Louis Wain, which is due out in December.

Speaking to Jimmy Kimmel, Cumberbatch gave an update on the much-discussed Doctor Strange reshoots:

“Like everything with Marvel, it comes in fresh, pretty much, most mornings,” Cumberbatch said. “It’s really exciting and the film is shaping up to be something special.”

As always, Cumberbatch is tight-lipped when questioned about other rumors surrounding his character, and whether Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire are in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Hopefully, we’ll learn more when the second No Way Home trailer releases on Tuesday, November 16!
