Black trench coats, sunglasses, green undertones, and one vibrant pop of color. The Matrix is back.

Warner Bros. is reviving The Matrix franchise for another round of sunglasses-wearing, slow-motion fighting, mind-bending fun as Keanu Reeves discovers once again that it’s the robots’ world; we just live in it.

Reeves will return in the new movie as Neo, a mild-mannered programmer who suspects there’s something amiss about his reality and ends up being extremely right. Carrie-Anne Moss is also back as Trinity, who pulls the wool back from his eyes to show him that he’s living in an elaborate computer simulation called The Matrix.

Weirdly, Laurence Fishburne is not returning as Neo’s mentor Morpheus; instead the role will be played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and we still don’t know if there’s a story reason for that or if Fishburne just didn’t wanna. Other cast members include Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Priyanka Chopra and Neil Patrick Harris, in addition to series veterans Jada Pinkett Smith (Niobe), Lambert Wilson (The Merovingian) and Daniel Bernhardt (Agent Johnson). You can see some of them in this new poster released today:

Black trench coats were ever the fashion in the Matrix, although I appreciate Morpheus adding a splash of color with his salmon-and-teal combination. Other than that everything looks in order, save that Keanu Reeves is now sporting his long John Wick hair. It’s not 1999 anymore.

And of course everyone wears sunglasses because it’s bright in cyberspace.

The Matrix Resurrections comes out in theaters and on HBO Max on December 22.

Next. Dune: Part Two will be “an amazing playground” of a movie. dark
