The Attack on Titan anime series started way back in 2013 and became a hit almost immediately. “Many years ago, humanity was forced to retreat behind the towering walls of a fortified city to escape the massive, man-eating Titans that lurked outside their fortress,” reads the official synopsis. “Only the heroic members of the Scout Regiment dared to stray behind the safety of the walls — but even those brave warriors seldom returned alive.” The show’s sense of uncompromising hopelessness was something seldom seen on TV, and it definitely had me hooked from the start.

Now, nearly a decade later, the final crop of episodes is in sight. Funimation announced today that the final episodes will start airing on January 9 on Funimation, Crunchyroll and Hulu. There’s also a spiffy new teaser trailer:

And if that weren’t enough, there’s also some cool keyart featuring hero (although we probably shouldn’t still be calling him that considering what he’s been up to) Eren Yeager staring us down with what I’m sure is genocidal intent:

I don’t really get what’s going on with all the refracted pictures coming down the one side of his face, but whatever.

Attack on Titan final season begins on January 9, 2022

“In the epic continuation of the worldwide anime phenomenon, starting with episode 76, the lines between friends and enemies become even more blurred,” reads the press release. “The War for Paradis explodes in Shiganshina and as battle rages on and the true intentions of the masterminds behind the current state of the world become clear…”

Indeed, the line between friend and enemy has become extremely blurry as the series gone on, with our protagonist Eren taking very dark turn. It kind of reminds me of what happened with Daenerys Targaryen at the end of Game of Thrones season 8, only Attack on Titan is taking a lot more time with it.

See you in the new year!

Next. As expected, Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop show can’t compete with the original. dark
