EOne president Michael Lombardo, who used to be HBO’s head of programming, is putting together a network of shows and movies all about the Power Rangers, the 1990s superhero team who fought aliens, robots, and other assorted nasties on Saturday mornings to the delight of ’90s kids everywhere. Their new adventures will be shepherded by I Am Not Okay with This creator Jonathan Entwistle and appear exclusively on Netflix.

“Since we set up Power Rangers with Jonathan, we pitched really a whole-world approach,” Lombardo told Deadline. “It’s not just one show, it is shows followed by films, some kids’ programming. We have found a great writing partner for him, they are off. Knock on wood, Netflix is excited, we’re excited, we hope to have some news soon.”

Power Rangers has never really gone away since its heyday in the ’90s, with plenty of movies and TV shows between then and now keeping fans fed. The most recent high-profile attempt at a reboot came in 2017, when director Dean Israelite did a kind of gritty version of the story.

Something tells me Netflix will go in a different direction, but who knows?

Power Rangers goes Marvel on Netflix

Netflix’s decision to dive head first into a Power Rangers Cinematic Universe is typical in our Marvel-dominated age. Everyone wants their own MCU. This reminds me a bit of what Netflix is doing with The Witcher, which has only one season out so far but has already released a spinoff animated movie while a prequel live-action series bubbles up in the background.

There’s no word on when the new Power Rangers stuff will start to hit Netflix. It sounds like this could be the beginning of a long journey for the streamer.

Next. The Wheel of Time is now the most pirated show in the world. dark
