When it comes to Star Wars, Disney is far from afraid to trade in nostalgia. The Star Wars sequel trilogy was packed with old faces from the original movies, including Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo and Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa. This December will see the release of The Book of Boba Fett, a show all about the beloved bounty hunter first introduced in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back. There’s also a show about Obi-Wan Kenobi in the works, starring Ewan McGregor back in the role he first played in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Hayden Christensen is also returning as Darth Vader.

But what about the new characters introduced in the sequel trilogy? What about Rey, Finn, Poe, Rose and all the rest? Is it too early to bring them back in a Disney+ series or something? Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy hinted that they will show up again sooner or later. “Certainly, those are not characters we’re going to forget,” she told Empire. “They will live on, and those are conversations that are going on with the creative team as well.”

Technically, characters like Rey and BB-8 have shown up in LEGO-themed Star Wars holiday specials on Disney+ already, but I think fans are more interested in seeing these characters in the flesh up on screen once again played by the likes of Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Oscar Isaac. Knowing Disney, it’s only a matter of time.

Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen were “emotional” about reuniting for Obi-Wan Kenobi show

Closer in time, Kennedy is looking forward to seeing Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen mix it up again as Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader. If the prospect of seeing these two back onscreen together is emotional, the actors are right there with you. “The thing that was most exciting was being on the set and watching the two of them get excited,” Kennedy said. “They hadn’t seen one another in a long time. I was surprised at just how incredibly emotional it was for each of them to find themselves back in these roles, and just realizing how important Star Wars was to each of them. It was the beginning of their careers.”

Well, McGregor at least had already made a mark by then with Trainspotting, but point taken.

There’s no release date for the Obi-Wan Kenobi show as of yet, but look for it sometime in 2022.
