Game of Thrones is over two years gone, but not forgotten. HBO is already hard at work on a prequel series called House of the Dragon. Naturally, a lot of people are wondering what the original cast thinks of this, including the producers at Good Morning America, who asked Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) about it when he stopped by earlier this month.
First up, some context: House of the Dragon takes place around 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of a brutal Targaryen civil war that tore Westeros apart. Matt Smith plays the fierce dragon-rider Daemon Targaryen, brother to King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine), although they’re only two actors in the vast cast.
“I think it’s a two-edged sword, right?” Coster-Waldau said of the show’s prospects. “Cause I think they’ll get a lot of attention when they come out, a lot of eyes. That’s the good thing. The trick is that nobody knows these characters, so hopefully people will stick around.”
"But I thought it looked incredible. Matt Smith just rocks that white wig so well. I was just waiting for Emilia Clarke to show up, it’s the world of the Targaryens. I can’t wait to watch that show, for sure."
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau: Matt Smith “rocks” his Targaryen wig
Emilia Clarke will of course not show up, since the show takes place centuries before Daenerys was born, but I get what Coster-Waldau means. This is the story of the Targaryen family at its best and worst, and could be a thrilling adventure.
As for Coster-Waldau, he’s plugging away on new projects. Most recently he appeared in a short film from the United Nations called Don’t Choose Extinction, where he voiced a dinosaur addressing assembled world leaders about the climate change crisis. At least the dinosaurs didn’t cause their own extinction event.
House of the Dragon premieres on HBO and HBO Max sometime in 2022.
