HBO is currently developing a variety of Game of Thrones prequel series, including one based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. These low-stakes stories follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, a good-hearted knight with a reputation for being a bit thick in the head; and his squire Aegon V Targaryen, a Targaryen princeling way down in the succession order who can afford to tarry with this knight.
The two travel around Westeros having adventures. It’s kind of like if Brienne and Podrick from Game of Thrones had their own show, which sounds okay to me. In fact, Dunk and Egg was one of the first ideas George R.R. Martin pitched to HBO when they started talking about spinoffs — House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal wanted to do it too — but for one reason or another it didn’t happen at the time.
But now it is. And Variety reports that HBO has found a writer: Steve Conrad, best known for penning movies like The Pursuit of Happyness and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, as well as creating TV series like Patriot, the stop-motion show Ultra City Smiths, and Perpetual Grace LTD; he’s directed episodes of all three shows.
When does Tales of Dunk and Egg premiere on HBO?
So Conrad looks to have enough experience to manage a show, although we don’t know if he’s a superfan of Martin’s work the way Condal is; now that the news is out, we may find out sooner rather than later.
There’s no release date for the Dunk and Egg shows yet, but House of the Dragon premieres in 2022. And then there are a bunch of other Game of Thrones prequel series in development, including one about Nymeria and her 10,000 ships, one about Corlys Velaryon the Sea Snake, and an animated show or two. Personally, I think House of the Dragon and Tales of Dunk and Egg should be the ones that HBO really focuses on, but we’ll see what happens.
