Ideas for Gina Carano’s cancelled Star Wars show will be in The Mandalorian
By Dan Selcke
Disney has a ton of Star Wars TV shows coming down the pike, but not quite as many as they originally planned. Rangers of the New Republic was going to be a show revolving around ex-Rebel shock trooper Cara Dune, first introduced on The Mandalorian. But that fell apart after Disney fired Carano for what it described as “abhorrent and unacceptable” social media activity.
So Rangers of the New Republic is cancelled, but ideas from it may make it into the third season of The Mandalorian, at least according to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “We’d never written any scripts or anything on that,” she told Empire. “Some of that will figure into future episodes, I’m sure, of the next iteration of Mandalorian.”
"It’s pretty exciting to see what’s going to be coming next year with Obi-Wan and Andor, Mandalorian, Ahsoka. “These projects are all so individual and unique in their own way that I think they’ll appeal to a wide variety of audiences within Star Wars … In many ways, that’s the core of what inspired George [Lucas] to begin with. This long-form storytelling and ability to create interconnected storylines stems from that kind of Saturday matinee cliffhanger storytelling that George was so inspired by."
Originally, Rangers of the New Republic was going to run parallel with The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka, with all of them coming together for a huge climax somewhere down the road. Losing Carano means there will be some retooling, but nothing Disney can’t handle; this is one of the hazards of insisting on having a cinematic universe, after all.
Even more Star Wars spinoff shows are coming
Kennedy also hinted that there are “a couple of other things that are in the hopper,” so as many Star Wars shows are in production now, it may only be the beginning.
Star Wars producer Dave Filoni also weighed in. “There seem to be so many stories to tell, we’re definitely never going to run out,” he said. “[The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau] and I ultimately are just two people that love this stuff. We’re privileged to get to tell stories that we think we like, and that we hope fans will like. It really boils down as simple as that.”
We don’t know when the third season of The Mandalorian will premiere on Disney+. But in the meantime, you can catch The Book of Boba Fett on December 29.
