Nicolas Cage will play legendary vampire Dracula in Renfield, an upcoming comedy focused on Dracula’s bug-eating, worshipful lackey, played in this case by Nicholas Hoult.

Nicolas Cage was once one of the biggest movie stars in the world, blowing up in movies like Moonstruck and Raising Arizona, winning an Oscar for Leaving Lost Vegas, and fronting blockbusters like The Rock and National Treasure. Over time he developed a reputation for bug-eyed scenery chewing, and I say that lovingly; the man is very watchable.

In recent years, he’s been more into indie work. Renfield will mark his return to a big-budget studio film. The movie is directed by Chris McKay, the guy behind The Lego Batman MovieThe Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman is producing.

What is Renfield about?

The Hollywood Reporter says that the movie will be “comedic in tone,” which sounds right. Not that he can’t do drama, but a funny Dracula better fits his recent star persona.

As for the story, it will take place in modern times. We don’t know if this will be another adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel Dracula — maybe told from Renfield’s perspective this time — or if it’ll be something new. There have been a lot of Dracula stories over the years to draw from.

There’s no release date for Renfield yet, but the sooner it comes out the better.
