Now AMC is adapting Anne Rice’s The Mayfair Witches, too

AMC is hard at work on a TV adaptation of Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice’s classic novel that reimagined vampires as lonely, sexy bloodsuckers who yearn for meaning throughout the ages. Game of Thrones veteran Jacob Anderson plays lead character Louis, Sam Reid is the rebellious Lestat, and Bailey Bass is the young(looking) Claudia.

But AMC didn’t just get the rights to that book; it has the rights to practically Rice’s entire catalog, and has just announced another adaptation: The Mayfair Witches.

The first book in The Mayfair Witches trilogy, The Witching Hour, came out in 1990. It’s about a neurosurgeon named Rowan Mayfair who inherits extensive magical powers upon her mother’s death, not to mention the attentions of predatory spirit named Lasher. AMC says that it’s “the second series in an expanding Anne Rice universe,” which tracks; everybody wants their own cinematic universe now. Thanks, Marvel.

The Mayfair Witches series is coming to AMC next year

The Mayfair Witches show will be managed by Esta Spalding and written by Michelle Ashford. The two of them put out a joint statement:

"The world of witches has fascinated and terrified for centuries, and yet Anne Rice’s particular lens on witches explored something new altogether – women who are powerful, and often brutal, and always committed to subverting our current power structures. We are so excited to join our partners AMC and Gran Via Productions in making this mysterious and provocative world come to life."

The Walking Dead is coming to an end, and the spinoff shows haven’t been quite the smash hit AMC has wanted them to be. Will this be the network’s new horror cash cow?

The Mayfair Witches will be out sometime in 2022, although we don’t know exactly when. Ditto for Interview with the Vampire, although word is filming starts on that one this month!
