As ever, there’s lots of movement over at Marvel. Deadline reports today that Destin Daniel Cretton, the director behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has signed a new deal with Marvel Studios and with Hulu’s Onyx Collective. He’ll be directing a sequel to Shang-Chi, which is no surprise considering what a hit it’s been, as well as working on multiple TV projects. Those include Disney+ series American Born Chinese, an action-comedy based on the 2006 graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, and a mystery Disney+ series.
What is the mystery Disney+ series? We don’t know, but there’s a good bit it’s related to Shang-Chi. Especially for its newer movies, Disney likes to underline them with TV shows. For instance, it’s working on a Wakanda TV show to tie into its upcoming Black Panther sequel, and the forthcoming show Ms. Marvel will lead into the Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels. The first Shang-Chi movie introduced several characters who might get their own spinoff and I’m sure the sequel will bring in more, so that’s my bet.
“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings,” said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. “We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney+, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started.”
Cretton himself made a statement as well: “Working on Shang-Chi with Kevin and the Marvel Studios team was one of the highlights of my life, and I couldn’t be more excited about Tara’s vision for Onyx Collective. I can’t wait to explore new stories and build new worlds with this community.”
Watch new clips from Morbius and Into the Spider-Verse sequel
Speaking of Marvel stuff (or Marvel-adjacent stuff, to be specific), there have been a bunch of trailers and sneak peaks coming out lately. For instance, Sony gave us our first look at the upcoming Into the Spider-Verse sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One).
So that means they’re already planning a Part Two. Joy. The movie comes out on October 7, 2022.
We also got a full scene from Morbius, about Spider-Man’s regular vampiric nemesis:
Morbius comes out on January 28, 2022.
