The Batman isn’t even out in theaters yet, but Warner Bros. is already preparing multiple spinoff series to run on HBO Max.

The Batman is the latest movie to star the Caped Crusader, this time played Twilight veteran Robert Pattinson. It won’t open until next year, but Warner Bros. is already planning multiple spinoff series to air on HBO Max. Because remember: the point of the movie these days isn’t to stand by itself; it’s to start a cinematic universe.

We already know that Warner Bros. is preparing a show set at the Gotham City Police department, possibly with Jeffrey Wright reprising his role as Commissioner Jim Gordon from the film. Now, Variety brings us the news that In Bruges star Colin Farrell is getting his own show. Farrell plays iconic Batman villain the Penguin; the series will explore the villain’s rise to power in the Gotham criminal underworld. We don’t know if it would be set before or after the events of the movie.

What’s funny is that the Penguin doesn’t even look to be the main villain of The Batman; based on the trailer, that would be Paul Dano’s Riddler. But again, Warner Bros. wants to get a franchise out of this, so every character is a potential opportunity.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman ended up on HBO Max, as well.

The Batman comes out in theaters on March 4, 2022. And another cinematic universe will be born.
