Doctor Who wrapped up its thirteenth season this weekend, Whittaker’s last in the title role. However, just because Whittaker won’t be in season 14 doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of her on the show.

Next year, there are three more specials set to air before Whittaker’s Doctor officially regenerates. The first will air on New Year’s Day!

Like last year’s holiday special, this one will be all about the Daleks, and is appropriately titled, “Eve of the Daleks.” I don’t know what it is about these exterminating monsters, but Whovians and the creative team can never get enough of them.

Watch the teaser trailer below!

Doctor Who’s 2022 holiday special

The Doctor, Yaz (Mandip Gill), and Dan (John Bishop) will find themselves stuck in a time loop as they go up against the Daleks. Joining them for the wild ride is the owner of a storage facility, Sarah (Aisling Bea), and her customer Nick (Adjani Salmon). The lot of them must break out of the time loop of being exterminated again and again by these pesky aliens. A nightmare scenario, indeed!

I for one can’t wait to see what this first special has in store for us. It also breaks my heart because it means Whittaker’s time as the Doctor is almost coming to an end, but at least we still have some time with her left.

When that’s over, the keys of the kingdom will be handed back to former showrunner Russell T Davies and whoever the next Doctor will be. I don’t think we’re getting that announcement for a while, but there are plenty of people willing to take on the role, so stay tuned.

Doctor Who’s 2022 New Year’s Day special, “Eve of the Daleks,” will air on Sunday, January 1 on BBC America.
