The Walking Dead franchise has been around for over a decade now. Back in 2010, no one anticipated that not only would the original zombie show become so popular, but also spawn a number of spinoffs, including Fear and the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: World Beyond.
Despite the fact The Walking Dead is ending next year and World Beyond just aired its series finale this week, the franchise isn’t ending anytime soon. AMC Networks interim CEO Matthew Blank said as much during the virtual UBS Global Technology, Media, and Telecom Conference, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Along with part 2 of The Walking Dead’s final season premiering in February, next summer we’re also getting the anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead. According to Blank, Tales could “bring a whole new generation of Walking Dead fans into the universe.” With Tales in place, Blank says the 2022 lineup is “probably the strongest schedule we have had in several years.” And there are more shows coming down the pike, like one about Carol and Daryl. “This is a franchise that is going to live for a long time.”
The future of The Walking Dead universe
Blank made these comments just one day after AMC renewed Fear The Walking Dead for season 8 and revealed that *drum roll* Kim Dickens will return as a series regular. We’ve been waiting for the return of Madison Clark, and now it’s finally happening!
We also can’t forget about the Rick Grimes movies starring Andrew Lincoln that are on the way. The pandemic delayed things, but as far as we know those are still coming The film will hopefully explain what happened after Rick Grimes was rescued by Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh) in The Walking Dead season 9. When Jadis showed up briefly on World Beyond, She alluded to Rick, although she didn’t use his name and he didn’t make a cameo appearance, despite the fondest wishes of our hearts.
And there will be plenty more Walking Dead content in the months and years ahead, so stay tuned!
