Netflix is looking to add a movie based on Capcom’s Mega Man to its growing list of video game adaptations.
Netflix has had a lot of success with video game adaptations over the last few years, whether its Castlevania, The Witcher* or the recent League of Legends: Arcane. And it sounds like they’re going to keep pushing in that direction, with IGN reporting that the streaming service is working on a live-action Mega Man movie.
The Mega Man franchise started back in the early days of gaming. It’s about a good robot who takes on a bunch of evil robots by shooting them with his little pop gun; afterwards, he absorbs their powers and gets a new weapon. The series has gone through many iterations over the last 30-plus years, and developer Capcom is still putting out new games to this day.
Word of a Mega Man movie first started going around in 2018, when it was going to be made for 20th Century Fox by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. “We are super excited about it,” Joost said at the time. “I think we’re going to have some big news about it soon. I can’t say all that much right now, but it’s a project very near and dear to our hearts and we’re psyched.”
Joost and Schulman are still involved, but the project looks like it has migrated to Netflix, as revealed on the pair’s official web site:
"Henry, Rel, and their in-house producer Orlee-Rose Strauss maintain an active development slate. Features in the works include an adaptation of Capcom’s Mega Man for Chernin Entertainment and Netflix, which they wrote and are directing."
And there you have it! The project is still early in development, so let’s say to expect it in 2023 or so.
*Yes, I know that The Witcher is adapted from Andrzej Sapkowski’s books, not The Witcher video games from CD Projekt Red, but the reason Netflix was interested in the books was because the games popularized the world, so I’m counting it.
