Who was Jack the Ripper? Who killed JFK? Who put that coffee cup on the set of Game of Thrones during the filming of the season 8 episode “The Last of the Starks”? These are three equally important historical mysteries that will probably never be fully solved, in part because people keep suggesting new theories. The cast and crew of Game of Thrones have pointed so many fingers at potential culprits in the coffee cup case that I’ve lost count.

And there are still more coming in! The latest comes from Andrew McClay, a Game of Thrones extra who has achieved sort of iconic status within the fandom; he was famously passionate about the show, and prominently featured in the behind-the-scenes documentary The Last Watch.

Jason Momoa left that coffee cup on the Game of Thrones set

Anyway, McClay was giving an interview when the topic of the coffee cup came up. And he revealed the truth behind the lies, the skull beneath the skin:

"I keep on hearing bullshit, and I’m going to myself, ‘Do you know who’s fault that is? Fucking Jason Momoa. That’s Khal Drogo’s fault.’ Cause he was over, he was shooting…It’s [a] generic coffee cup that comes off our take tables…In that coffee cup is honey and lemon for Emilia’s throat. Because her fucking throat was killing her, right?"

So McClay’s claim is former Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa was on set that day, perhaps visiting his old friends while he was shooting something else nearby, and got Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) a coffee cup full of honey and lemon for her throat. That does fit given how close Clarke and Momoa are — they’ve been chummy ever since appearing on Thrones together in the first season — and it’s such an out-of-left-field choice that I’m inclined to believe it. Truth is stranger than fiction and all that.

Also, it’s a fun answer to this mystery, so why not believe it? But we will let history decide the true culprit.
