After the success of Dune: Part One, Denis Villeneuve will adapt Arthur C. Clarke’s classic sci-fi story ‘Rendezvous with Rama”…after he does Part Two.
Denis Villeneuve may be the most prolific science fiction movie director of our time. He made a sequel to Blade Runner, had a great original hit with Arrival, and did what David Lynch couldn’t by successfully adapting Dune. Now The Hollywood Reporter has it that he’s setting his sights on another sci-fi titan: Arthur C. Clarke, the author of 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Specifically, Villeneuve will be making a movie out of Rendezvous with Rama, considered one of Clarke’s seminal works. Published in 1973, the novel centers around a group of human explorers who intercept a cylindrical alien spaceship in an attempt to unlock its mysteries. The whole thing does sound a bit like Arrival, which also involved humans trying to understand aliens, so it sounds right up Villeneuve’s alley. If Hollywood ever wants to remake 2001: A Space Odyssey, I think he’s the only reasonable option.
The movie will be produced by Alcon Entertainment. In a statement, Co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosov said Rendezvous with Rama is “one of the most intelligent works of fiction in the genre … and is a work for our time…It’s perfectly fitted to our friend and collaborator Denis’ brilliant sensibilities and specifically to his love and passion for science fiction.”
This sounds like it could be worth watch, but of course, Villeneuve has Dune: Part Two to make before he starts anything new. Expect that movie to come along in October of 2023.
