Netflix’s live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender casts a bunch of key characters, including the sociopathic fire-bending prodigy Azula.

Although it hit a speed bump when the creators of the original animated series left the project, Netflix’s live-action remake of Avatar: The Last Airbender is moving forward. We already knew of several key cast members in place, including Gordon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka, Dallas Liu as Zuko (Dallas Liu), Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as Uncle Iroh. Now, Variety brings us news of yet more actors coming aboard.

Let’s run down the new arrivals:

  • Elizabeth Yu (All My Love) will play Azula, the daughter of Fire Lord Ozai and Zuko’s younger sister. She’s a fire-bending prodigy, a calculating warrior and a bit of a psychopath. She was my favorite character from the original show so I’m hoping they do her justice!
  • Maria Zhang is Suki, the leader of an elite female fighting force known as the Kyoshi Warriors. She gets involved with Sokka.
  • Tamlyn Tomita (Cobra Kai) is Suki’s mother Yukari, who I don’t believe we met in the original show, although I could be wrong.
  • Yvonne Chapman (Family Law) will play Avatar Kyoshi, a past Avatar with an unbendable will.
  • Casey Camp-Horinek (Reservation Dogs) is Gran Gran, Katara and Sokka’s grandmother.

It’s cool to see this cast coming together. Now Netflix has to prove that the show is worth making in the first place, which could be tricky considering how excellent and beloved the original is. Best of luck to them.

There’s no release date for The Last Airbender remake set as of yet, but considering how much steam it’s picking up, I would expect it sometime in 2022.
