The Walking Dead showrunner to adapt fantasy novel Black Sun
By Daniel Roman
We may have mentioned this before, just once or twice, but it is a fantastic time to be a fantasy and science fiction fan. Every studio is trying to find the next Game of Thrones, with the inevitable result being that we have a consistent stream of new fantasy and sci-fi TV shows and movies to consume.
Case-in-point: The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that AMC Studios has acquired the rights to adapt the fantasy novel Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse. The studio won the rights in a “competitive bidding situation,” which should come as no surprise considering how much acclaim Roanhorse’s novel has garnered. Black Sun was nominated for a Hugo Award and has been making waves in the fantasy community since its release in October 2020 — especially for its unique setting and worldbuilding, which draws inspiration from the Pre-Columbian empires of the Americas, like the Maya and Aztec.
AMC gains rights to adapt Black Sun
While optioning rights to the property is not a guarantee that a show will be made, there’s reason to be optimistic about this one. Both Roanhorse and Angela Kang, the current showrunner for The Walking Dead, are attached as executive producers. There were lots of different studios interested in the auction, which likely means AMC paid a hefty amount for the rights; after that, it would be silly not to do something with them, right?
Black Sun is the first novel in Roanhorse’s Between Earth and Sky series. The second novel, Fevered Star, is due out from Saga Press in April 2022. Roanhorse has many previous works under her belt, including Trail of Lightning and its sequel Storm of Locusts, Star Wars: Resistance Reborn and Race to the Sun, which is part of the Rick Riordan Presents line of middle-grade novels that strive to bring different cultural myths to young readers. She also won a Hugo Award in 2017 for her short story “Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience,” and has recently written a new run of comics for Marvel about the character Echo, who should be familiar by now to Hawkeye fans.
It’ll likely be a while before we get further developments on this story, but for now it’s an announcement worth getting excited about.
