The Witcher season 2 is out on Netflix, and by all accounts it’s an improvement on the first season in every way.
But it’s only the beginning. Netflix is going all in on The Witcher, with an animated standalone movie already out and a live-action prequel series on the way. As for the main show, they still have several of Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to get through, meaning they could be on for years yet.
That said, don’t expect the third season to follow hot on the heels of the second. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich recently told Tech Radar that the “creative process was only just starting” on the next batch of episodes. “Actually, this is our last week in the writers’ room,” she said earlier this month. “We’re almost done with the scripting phase, and it’s amazing. I’m really thrilled with how the season is shaping up because it’s based on my favorite book in the saga, which is The Time of Contempt.”
"I feel like seasons 1 and 2 have been laying the playing field for everything huge that’s about to happen. But the creative process is now really just starting. We have the scripts, and now we’ll bring directors on, the actors back in, and really start delving in deeper and reflecting back and making sure that it’s the perfect season."
Time of Contempt is the fourth of Sapochnik’s Witcher books, and the second to read like a proper novel. The current second season is based on Blood of Elves.
When will The Witcher season 3 drop on Netflix?
The second season of The Witcher was hit by several COVID delays, resulting in the second season debuting later than originally planned. COVID is very much still a problem in Hollywood and in general, but at least now there are processes in place that should make for a smoother experience.
That said, it will still take a while to make a whole new season of television, under these or any other conditions. I’d predict we’re watching The Witcher season 3 near the end of 2022 at the very earliest.
