See (a tiny bit of) new footage from House of the Dragon
By Dan Selcke
It’s the end of the year, and HBO has seen fit to grace us with a quick sneak peak at what it has coming in 2022. And it has some good stuff on the way, starting with House of the Dragon, the network’s Game of Thrones prequel series.
Set around 200 years before the original show, House of the Dragon tells the story of a brutal civil war that divided the Targaryen family and brought ruin to Westeros. HBO put out a full teaser trailer a while back. This new video mostly showcases stuff we’ve already seen, but there is literally one second of new stuff around the 0:37 mark.
What we see here is Alicent Hightower, played by Olivia Cooke, raising a dagger as she rushes through a crowd. She’s clearly distraught. This is almost certainly a scene plucked from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the book on which House of the Dragon is based. Alicent is married to King Viserys I Targaryen, but has a rivalry with his daughter from a previous marriage, Rhaenyra Targaryen. The enmity extends to their children. In this scene, Rhaenyra’s three sons have just gotten into a fight with Alicent’s son Aemond, a fight that ends with Aemond losing an eye. Enraged, Alicent brings the dagger to the king and demands that he command the eye of one of Rhaenyra’s sons be lanced out in repayment.
That doesn’t happen, but it gives you an idea of how tense things are at court. Once the king dies and there’s a split of opinion over who should succeed him…whoof, things get really rough, really fast.
Anyway, we saw a brief snippet of Alicent with the dagger in the original trailer. This year-ender gives us literally another half-second. And that’s probably all the new House of the Dragon footage we’ll get until 2022.
See the first glimpse of Westworld season 4
And there’s plenty more good stuff in this video. Most notably, we get our first look at the upcoming fourth season of Westworld, featuring the newly robotic Man in Black (Ed Harris) and Aaron Paul’s Caleb sporting a whole new look:
They still have bangs in the future, thank goodness.
Beyond that, we also get brief looks at His Dark Materials, Peacemaker, The Nevers, The Gilded Age, Barry, The Righteous Gemstones, Hacks, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, and Raised by Wolves.
I’d also call attention to Our Flag Means Death, a new pirate series created and starring Taika Waititi, the guy behind Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do In The Shadows and more. Pretty much everything this guy touches turns to gold, so this is worth paying attention. Plus it stars Game of Thrones veteran Kristian Nairn. Hodor returns to HBO!
2022 should be another good year for TV!
