It’s been over a decade since Avatar landed in movie theaters way back in 2009. James Cameron’s sci-fi film has since become the highest grossing movie of all time, although it’s never gotten a sequel…

…until now. In fact, Disney is planning at least four more Avatar movies, with the first coming out at the end of this year (remember it’s 2022 now). So what has happened to Jake (Sam Worthington), the space marine who transferred his consciousness into the body of a Na’vi alien at the end of the first movie?

Well, as producer Jon Landau explained to Empire, Jake has since settled down with his Na’vi mate Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), with whom he has three Na’vi children: Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) and Tuktirey (Trinity Bliss). The twist is that they also have an adopted human son named Miles Socorro, aka Spider, played by Jack Champion. Empire has an advance look at him:

Spider was born on a military base on the planet Pandora but too small to return to Earth. Jake is happy to accept him in his family, but there are issues. “Jake took him in but Neytiri always saw him as one of the people who destroyed her home and killed her father,” Landau said. “So you have all these dynamics playing out.”

"If you look at what [James Cameron] does in his movies, he writes in universal themes that are bigger than the genre of any one movie. This time around, we’re taking Jake and Neytiri and building the most universal theme of all around them. Which is family. Jake comes from the human world, Neytiri from the Na’vi world. So, they’re like a modern mixed-race couple, raising kids who perhaps feel they don’t belong to one world or another."

Part of Avatar 2 will take place on Earth

Another interesting tidbit about Avatar 2 came out when Cameron talked with Dune director Denis Villeneuve for Variety. This time it involved the setting:

"Just like Dune takes place across worlds, the later Avatars take place across, certainly across two worlds, because some of it takes place on Earth as the story evolves."

The first Avatar movie took place entirely on the planet of Pandora, with an Earth company was mining for its precious Unobtanium, which is a name so doofy I’m still surprised they got away with it. Expanding things to Earth will complicate matters, but we do have four movies to fill here, so it makes sense.

Avatar 2 comes out later this year, on December 22.
