Invincible season 2 will be “even better than season 1”
By Dan Selcke
Amazon is carving out a niche for itself as the streaming service for superhero fans who don’t like superhero stories. First there was The Boys, which imagined what Superman would be like if he was a sociopathic man-child. And then there’s Invincible, which is another evil Superman story. They’re all about subverting superhero tropes over there.
The evil Superman de jour is Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), the world’s strongest hero. Although the show itself is more about his son Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), who as a teenager discovers he has powers of his own.
Invincible is based on a comic series by Robert Kirkman, best known as the creator of The Walking Dead. The first season of the show was great because of the way it balanced Mark’s relatively traditional story of superheroism with some much darker, more violent themes, all while keeping its sense of humor. And according to Yeun, things only get better from here. “I’ve talked to Robert [Kirkman], here and there,” he told Collider. “He’s super excited about it. He thinks Season 2 is gonna be even better than Season 1, which I have no doubt about. If you go to his source material, Invincible is an incredible comic, and just thinking about how much story hasn’t been told from that run, it’s gonna be bonkers. I’m really excited about it.”
When does Invincible season 2 air on Amazon Prime Video?
Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound like we’ll get to watch Invincible season 2 anytime soon. “We haven’t started,” Yeun said. “I know we’re starting at some point soon.”
To be fair, I don’t know if he means that he and the rest of the cast haven’t started recording their voiceover parts, or if Amazon hasn’t started production at all; like, are scripts even written? If Kirkman is already excited, they’re probably at least a little bit along. And the comics have been running for years, so there’s plenty of source material.
Still, we’ll have to wait on a release date. The jury’s out on whether Invincible season 2 will premiere this year. But the good news is that Amazon has already renewed it for season 3, so wait times should go down as the series goes on.
