Morbius release date delayed again
By Daniel Roman
Some movies just can’t catch a break. Sony’s Morbius, which was originally scheduled for release in July 2020, has received numerous delays due to pandemic concerns and shifting theater schedules. The film was finally slated for a release on January 28, 2022…but now we’re learning that Morbius has been bumped back once again. This marks the fourth delay for the Jared Leto-fronted vampire antihero flick.
Per Reuters, Sony released a statement on January 3 announcing that Morbius will now be hitting theaters and IMAX on April 1, 2022. The move is being attributed both to concerns over the Omicron variant of the coronavirus making movie theaters less safe as we move into the new year, as well as a desire from the studio to space out its releases more in 2022. Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to dominate at the box office, exceeding expectations across the board to become the largest post-pandemic movie release, as well as one of the highest grossing films of all time…and it’s only been out for two and a half weeks. As No Way Home continues to draw people to movie theaters, it seems entirely possible that Sony is looking to avoid having two of its movies compete with each other.
Morbiuswill now release on April 1, 2022
Moribus will mark the next entry in the SSU, or Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which I think we can all agree is an upgrade from the SPUMC acronym Sony was using before. It tells the story of Doctor Michael Morbius, a biochemist who suffers from a rare blood disorder. Determined to find a cure and save others from the pain he has endured, Morbius attempts a risky experiment with vampire bats that ends up transforming him into the Living Vampire, which is exactly what it sounds like. Make note: any time someone suggests a vampire bat experiment, you probably know what’s going to happen.
Torn between revelry over his newfound health and power and the darkness of his thirst for blood, Morbius fits right in with the villain-centric universe Sony began with Venom. The film is being directed by Daniel Espinosa. In addition to Leto in the titular role, Morbius also stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson.
So mark your calendars: Morbius will now be coming out on April 1, 2022. I can’t help but note that this is also April Fool’s Day…but here’s hoping that this will be the actual release for Morbius and that Sony isn’t playing a long con prank on us.
