House of the Dragon is officially the most anticipated new show of 2022. But when will we get to see HBO’s follow-up to Game of Thrones?

Happily, it may not be as far off as you dread. HBO has been working on House of the Dragon for months now, and all indications are that filming will wrap soon if it hasn’t already. We could see House of the Dragon sometime in the second half of this year.

But we won’t see it in January; this story involves a lot of dragons, and those buggers take time to animate. In the meantime, the teaser trailer looks pretty epic.

When will House of the Dragon premiere on HBO?

I wouldn’t count on getting a firm release date for House of the Dragon at anytime before February 18-20, 2022. That’s when HBO is holding an official Game of Thrones conference in Las Vegas. That would be the perfect time for some big splashy announcement.

It may be a good idea to get the show out sooner in the year rather than later. In September, Amazon will debut its new Lord of the Rings series, and probably another season of The Wheel of Time. The next season of The Witcher will probably be out later in the year, too, if it doesn’t get pushed back to 2023. It’ll be a crowded time for high fantasy.

As for the show itself, it’s about a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, where different factions of the Targaryen faction fought over control of the Iron Throne. Should be a bloody good time.
