Watch the first full scene from the Uncharted movie
By Daniel Roman
Adventurers, get ready: the first full scene from Sony’s Uncharted movie is here and it’s crazy. Based on the massively popular Uncharted video game series from Naughty Dog, the film sees a young Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) and his mentor Sully (Mark Wahlberg) hunting for lost treasure on a globe-trotting quest that pits them up against criminal organizations, ancient puzzles, and outrageously dangerous stunts.
We’d previously seen a trailer for the movie, but Sony just dropped the first full-length clip. Check it out:
Fans of the games will probably recognize this dizzying plane fight sequence from Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. In that game, adventurer Nathan Drake needed to hop across a line of netted cargo hanging out the open hatch of a plane, which is what happens here. So that bodes well for the diehard Uncharted fans!
Also, can we just take a moment to appreciate how much effort Tom Holland is putting into capturing the energy and mannerisms of Nathan Drake? I was a little nervous when I first heard that he was stepping into the role, but it seems like he might pull it off really well.
Speaking with Empire, director Ruben Fleischer (Venom, Zombieland) talked about how dedicated the actor is. “If Drake was going to go solve a puzzle, Tom wanted to make sure that it felt like a moment from the game,” he said. “If he felt like getting the clue was too easy, he would look for ways to complicate it, just to add that layer of believability and make it feel as close to the games as possible.”
We also get a good look at a few other characters in this scene, including Mark Wahlberg’s Sully, who perfectly captures the character’s attitude from the games. We also get to know Braddock (Tati Garbrielle), a lieutenant working under the devious Moncada (Antonio Banderas). And we get a look at Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali), an ally of Nathan Drake’s who also clearly has the skillset to take out plenty of bad guys.
When does Uncharted come out?
Uncharted has a pretty solid list of talent behind the camera, too. Per Syfy Wire, in addition to Fleischer and Holland serving as executive producers, there are also several prominent members of the Naughty Dog game studio attached, including co-presidents Evan Wells and Neil Druckman (who also served as a vital part of the writing and design staff for the Uncharted games). The screenplay was penned by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, who wrote the first Iron Man movie, and The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins. There are quite a few reasons to think Uncharted might just be the first blockbuster of 2022.
The clip also gives us a little reminder at the end that we’re only a little more than a month away from Uncharted’s release! The movie hits theaters on February 18.
