The Witcher season 2 dropped on December 17, 2021…which means that by now, we’ve all watched it multiple times, theorized about what lies ahead for our heroes, and are generally anxious for the series’ next installment. Geralt of Rivia’s latest adventures saw him returning to the witcher’s keep of Kaer Morhen alongside his foster daughter Ciri, who trained in the ways of monster hunting. Their relationship grew this past season, as did the mystery surrounding Ciri’s otherworldly powers. Add into the mix Yennefer losing her powers, the politicking between the Nilfgaardian Empire and its Elven allies, and more monsters than you can shake a silver sword at, and season 2 of The Witcher had plenty to enjoy. We even got our first glimpse of the Wild Hunt!

After a brutal showdown at Kaer Morhen, Geralt (Henry Cavill), Ciri (Freya Allen), and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) are reunited and finally have a chance to catch their breath. There are a lot of threads left hanging at the end of season 2, and the book that the next season will be based on, The Time of Contempt, is largely considered one of the best in Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher series. Whatever comes next for our found family of adventurers, it’s going to be intense.

So you might be asking, how long will we have to wait to see season 3? You’re not the only one.

When does The Witcher season 3 come out?

Considering that season 2 only launched last month, it won’t come as too much of a surprise that we will not be getting The Witcher season 3 on Netflix this January. As of this writing, we know that scripts for the third season have been written, but the show has not yet entered into production. Alas, we’ll have to wait a bit more before returning to the Continent.

But perhaps not as long as you’d think. The end credits of The Witcher‘s season 2 finale included a teaser for Blood Origin, a spinoff prequel series that will explore the Conjunction of the Spheres, a historical event in the Witcher universe that saw multiple worlds collide and monsters, elves, and humans get stranded on the Continent. It has been confirmed that Blood Origin will be coming to Netflix in 2022, though no exact date has been announced.

As for when we can expect season 3 of the mothership show, we can take a look back at previous years for reference. The Witcher’s first season premiered in December of 2019 while its second, delayed by COVID-19, came out in December of 2021. Considering that The Witcher season 3 hasn’t entered production yet and that it’s a very special effects-heavy show (which means a lot of time in post-production), it’s likely that we won’t see it until December 2022, or even sometime in 2023.

For now, there’s always rewatching the first two seasons of The Witcher on Netflix, as well as the prequel anime film Nightmare of the Wolf.
