There was once a time when we waited years for any news about upcoming projects set in a galaxy far, far away, but these days the Star Wars franchise moves forward with all the implacability of a Star Destroyer. We’re coming up on the third episode of The Book of Boba Fett on Disney+, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series is on the way, and Lucasfilm has a novel about Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker, Star Wars: Brotherhood by Mike Chen, coming out on May 10. And all that is just the start!
Last week marked the one-year anniversary of Star Wars: The High Republic, a huge story told over multiple books and comics which is set 200 years before the prequel films, when the Galactic Republic was at the height of its power. The High Republic might be one of the most ambitious Star Wars projects to come along since the sequel trilogy revived the franchise. Beginning with the adult novel The Light of the Jedi by Charles Soule, The High Republic has spanned comics and middle-grade books, as well as young adult and adult novels. Over the past year, we’ve seen upwards of 10 different projects release from The High Republic, telling a massively interwoven story of a time when the Jedi were beacons of light and hope in the galaxy.
Phase 2 of Star Wars: The High Republic launches October 2022
Lucasfilm took some notes from Marvel’s playbook and dubbed their massive scattershot approach to The High Republic “phase one.” Which, of course, implies the existence of a phase two. Now we know for sure: phase two is on the way.
During the Star Wars: The High Republic Anniversary Special, it was confirmed that phase two of the multimedia series will launch in October 2022. In addition to teases for myriad comic, YA, and middle-grade stories that lie ahead in these last months of phase one, the special also confirmed that four new authors will be joining the roster for phase two: Zoraida Córdova (Labyrinth Lost, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge A Crash of Fate), Tessa Gratton (The Queens of Innis Lear, Lady Hotspur), George Mann (Broken Things, Star Wars: Myths & Fables), and Lydia Kang (Patient Zero, The Half-Life of Ruby Fielding). This brings the total list of High Republic authors up to nine, including current story architects Charles Soule, Cavan Scott, Claudia Gray, Daniel José Older, and Justina Ireland.
Phase two will be named The High Republic: Quest of the Jedi, and will be set 150 years before phase one. Which technically makes phase two a prequel series, in a move that feels pretty on brand for Star Wars.
January 4 marked the release of The Fallen Star by Claudia Gray, an adult novel that serves as one of the major crossover events of phase one. And from our friends at Dork Side of the Force, here are a few more key dates to put on the calendar for the phase one finale:
- Eye of the Storm #1 (comic): Jan. 12
- The High Republic Adventures: Galactic Bake-Off Spectacular (comic): Jan. 19
- Midnight Horizon (YA): Feb. 1
- The Battle for Starlight (children’s): Feb. 1
- Mission to Disaster (middle-grade): March 1
- The High Republic: Tempest Runner (script book): March 1
