Netflix’s fantasy series Shadow and Bone was one of the biggest genre hits of 2021, introducing viewers to a world filled with magic, politics, and mystical creatures. Based on the best-selling Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone tells the story of Alina Starkov, a teenage orphan who discovers she has a special kind of magic that could one day eliminate the Shadow Fold, a miles-long trench of perilous darkness that has literally split her homeland in half.

The show also brought in characters from another one of Bardugo’s novels, Six of Crows, interlacing them with Alina’s narrative in a way that was satisfying for newcomers and seasoned fans alike. Due to the success of season 1, Netflix renewed Shadow and Bone for a second season, but has been relatively tight-lipped since then.

However, it’s now been confirmed that Shadow and Bone has finally begun filming its second season. Taking to social media yesterday, actor David Wurawa, who plays the character Edyck on the show, posted to his Instagram stories announcing that shooting had officially started.

He also put up some of the behind-the-scenes shots on his profile, which you can see here. There are several photos of Wurawa in costume, as well as one with him and Pekka Rollins actor Dean Lennox Kelly. Edyck is an Enforcer in Rollins’ Dime Lions gang. The Dime Lions are a rival to the Crows, who are headed by Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter). So whatever lies ahead in season 2, it seems likely to include some trouble for the Crows.

When will Shadow and Bone season 2 premiere on Netflix?

Now that we know the show has begun filming, it may become a little easier to anticipate a release window for it. This news confirms we won’t be seeing Shadow and Bone in the first half of 2022. Considering that this is a show with tons of special effects and that major castings like the pirate Sturmhond haven’t been announced yet, there’s a very good chance we won’t see Shadow and Bone season 2 until late 2022 or early 2023.

Regardless, the fact that filming is officially underway is something to get excited about!
