The Lord of the Rings is one of the most beloved stories of the past 100 years, and plenty of people have made movies out of it. The biggest hits came in the early 2000s, when Peter Jackson adapted J.R.R. Tolkien’s trilogy for the big screen. The movies are still remembered fondly by many fans:

  • The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: December 19, 2001
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: December 18, 2002
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King: December 17, 2003

Later, Jackson returned to the well and made three movies based on Tolkien’s The Hobbit, although those weren’t as well received:

  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: December 6, 2012
  • The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: December 13, 2013
  • The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies: December 4, 2014

And now, Amazon is going back for another dip!

Lord of the Rings release dates

Amazon is making a Lord of the Rings series set during the Second Age of Middle-earth, so thousands of years before the trilogy most people know. A lot happened during that stretch — the rise of Sauron, the fall of Númenor, etc — although we don’t know what all the show will cover, or how it will cover it.

We do know when the series is coming out, though. You’ll be able to watch Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series when it premieres on September 2, 2022. So we return to Middle-earth later this year!
