Just the other day we reported that Netflix was getting underway on filming for the second season of Shadow and Bone, its adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s Russian-inspired fantasy series. The first season cleverly combined the story from Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone trilogy with characters from her Six of Crows duology. With that foundation established, season 2 is going full speed ahead.

In fact, Netflix just announced who will be playing some key characters from the coming episodes. Take a look:

Paddy Gibson is Nikolai Lantsov in Shadow and Bone season 2

Nikolai is a dashing “privateer” (don’t call him a pirate, he doesn’t like that), who Alina and Mal encounter in the second Shadow and Bone book, Siege and Storm. Nikolai initially goes by the name Sturmhond. His real name gives away his impressive ancestry, which will be key to the story going forward.

Lewis Tan is Tolya Yul-Bataar

Tolya is a Grisha Heartrender, meaning he has the ability to damage a person’s internal organs; slowing their pulse, taking the air from their lungs, that kind of thing. When we meet him, Tolya is part of Sturmhond’s crew. Although he’s Grisha, Tolya also fights with weapons, which might be why Netflix cast actor Lewis Tan, who played the lead role in last year’s Mortal Kombat movie and showed off all kinds of stunt-fighting prowess.

Anna Leong Brophy is Tamar Kir-Bataar

Tamar is the twin sister of Tolya. She is also a Grisha Heartrender serving under Sturmhond. Both Tamar and Tolya have Shu ancestry, something they have in common with Alina.

Jack Wolfe is Wylan Hendriks

All three of the above characters are from the Shadow and Bone trilogy. Wylan, on the other hand, is introduced in the book Six of Crows. Kaz recruits him as a demolitions expert to help the Crows pull a job on the Ice Court, an unbreachable military stronghold.

Like Nikolai, Wylan also has something of a secret identity, but we’ll leave that for the show to reveal. It’s interesting that Netflix is being up front about who “Sturmhond” really is but isn’t giving us Wylan’s real name off the bat.

We don’t know when Shadow and Bone season 2 will be out, but with production getting underway, it’s not out of the question that it could drop on Netflix sometime this year.
