Shadow and Bone: Who is Patrick Gibson, who plays Nikolai Lantsov?
By WiC Staff
The other day, Netflix announced several new cast members for the second season of Shadow and Bone, its adaptation of Leigh Bardugo’s Russian-inspired fantasy saga. The character fans are most interested in is probably Nikolai Lantsov, aka Sturmhond, who will be played by Irish actor Patrick Gibson:
We first meet Nikolai when he’s going under the alias of Sturmhond, a “privateer” (he prefers that word to “pirate”) who commands a small fleet. Dashing and daring, he seems like something out a fairy tale.
Later, we learn that Nikolai is actually a prince of Ravka, which has big implications on the story. The role is beloved by fans of Bardugo’s novels, so Gibson has a lot to live up to.

Gibson is a 26-year-old actor who has appeared in series like The Tudors, The Passing Bells, and The OA. He received the Rising Star Award from the Irish Film & Television Academy in 2017, and getting a sought-after role like Nikolai in a popular show like Shadow and Bone certainly seems to vindicate that choice.
Gibson has also done movies like Tolkien and The Darkest Minds. He has the experience to do the role justice. Now we have to see if he can bring the swagger and confidence that the character is known for.
Netflix hasn’t announced a release date for Shadow and Bone season 2 just yet, but we’re crossing our fingers that it’ll be out this year.
