Ben Affleck may be out as Batman, but the Bat-universe is very much alive. Between Robert Pattinson starring as the Caped Crusader in The Batman and Michael Keaton returning to the role of Bruce Wayne in The Flash after three decades away, there’s a lot happening.

And then there’s pop star-turned-actor Leslie Grace as Batgirl in the upcoming HBO Max movie of the same name. Grace impressed audiences with her performance in the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical In The Heights. Now she’s playing Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon (J.K. Simmons) who becomes a crime-fighter. Grace posted a picture of herself in her costume on Instagram:

The suit is a lovely deep purple that contrasts nicely with the yellow of her cape; it’s nice to see a superhero rock some primary colors, particularly in the DC Extended Universe where things tend to be a bit more drab and muted.

As for the quote, it’s from 2003’s Batgirl: Year One. “I use their expectations against them. That will be their weakness. Not mine. Let them all underestimate me…And when their guard is down, and their pride is rising, let me kick their butts.”

Brandan Fraser plays the villain in the Batgirl movie

Batgirl is being directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah off a screenplay by Bird Of Prey writer Christina Hodson. At one point the movie was going to be written and directed by Joss Whedon, but now that he’s been exiled from show business, that’s obviously not going to happen.

In addition to Grace and Simmons, who barely appeared as Commissioner Gordon in Justice League, Michael Keaton will appear in the movie. And Brendan Fraser will play the villain Firefly.

We don’t have a release date for Batgirl just yet, but it’ll probably be along sometime this year.
