Sam Heughan, Outlander cast tease “intense” season 6

Outlander fans, keep your beating hearts calm, as we are only T-minus two months away from the premiere of season 6. The wait has been long and grueling — we’ve had to put up with two years of Droughtlander — but it is almost time.

And you know how I know that? Because we’re starting to see more and more interviews with the cast and crew about it. For instance, TV Guide Magazine is releasing its Outlander Forever Special Collector’s Issue. You can preorder your copy here; I’ve already ordered mine! This kind of thing is always a good sign that the end is nigh, and soon enough we will be humming the iconic tune of “The Skye Boat Song” again.

It’s no secret that the upcoming sixth season of Outlander is going to be very emotional. Claire (Caitriona Balfe) endured a horrifying assault at the end of season 5, and Fraser’s Ridge is threatened ahead of the coming Revolutionary War.

Outlander season 6 is “intense and really packed”

Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie Fraser, told TV Guide about what’s coming for Fraser’s Ridge in season 6. “Claire and Jamie have spent a long time building that community,” he said. “It disintegrates.” No! Why! Ugh!

Executive producer Maril Davis expanded on that: “Season 6 is about, what do you do when that home turns against you? There’s distrust and conflict on the Ridge. It is a journey of trauma for so many.” Is there anything positive about this season? At least the season 6 premiere is 90 minutes long, so we’ll get a lot of bang for our Outlander buck.

According to Heughan, Claire has a long road ahead of her to work through the aftermath of her assault. And that will be especially hard given that we’ll see more of the Brown family. In case you’ve forgotten, Lionel Brown (Ned Dennehy) and his unruly group of bandits are the ones responsible for assaulting Claire. Luckily, Jamie showed up to rescue her and take Lionel in, but it was his stepdaughter Marsali (Lauren Lyle) that actually killed Lionel by poisoning him.

Out of honor, Jamie went to give Lionel’s body to his brother Richard (Chris Larkin), but the conflict is far from settled. “This is only the beginning of an even bigger, deeper animosity between the two,” Heughan said. “Richard is an extremely dangerous man, and very powerful. You’re going to see a lot more of the Browns.”

Oh, and according to Balfe, Claire will be “destabilized” thanks to the trauma she had to endure. According to executive producer Matthew B. Roberts, it’s going to be emotional to watch. “There are many scenes where we just let the actors go,” he said. “They’re heartbreaking, moving, and joyous. The [characters are] looking in each other’s eyes, and there’s a lot of emotion. The audience is going to be on the edge of their seats and holding their breaths. At the end of some [scenes], they are going to be bawling their eyes out.”

Sigh, I’m not ready, folks.
