The new trailer for Marvel’s Moon Knight hit early this week, and the consensus has been that it looks pretty awesome. Between the twisty split-personality narrative, the Egyptian iconography, and the general darker tone, it looks like the first Disney+ superhero show of 2022 is going to kick things off on a great note.
One place where the fans are somewhat more divided is over lead actor Oscar Isaac’s British accent. Some find it weird, some find it great, others find it…fine. When Moon Knight was first announced, I doubt any of us figured the most divisive aspect of the show would be the lead actor’s accent. Here’s the trailer, in case you want a refresher.
The internet weighs in on Oscar Isaac’s British accent
Isaac, who was born in Guatemala but grew up in the United States, has never donned an accent quite like this for any of his projects. Happily, the internet is here to help us work through our feelings about it:
Not everyone hates it, of course, because the internet is a vast ocean of difference:
Moon Knight is a character who has multiple personalities. The main one we spend time with in the trailer is Steven Grant, who in the show appears to be working at the gift shop of a London museum. I’m very much with the following user, who points out that this could be an accent specific to the Steven Grant persona. I’m expecting different voices for each of the character’s personalities, if not totally different accents as well.
Oscar Isaac mocks his own British accent
Even Isaac himself cracked a bit of a joke at his accent when he was reacting to the trailer with costar Ethan Hawke. “In waking life,” he mimics the trailer. “Please sir, can I have some more?”
If even the actor can joke about it, then I figure we can as well.
Whether you love, hate, or are rolling your eyes at Oscar Isaac’s accent in the Moon Knight trailer, we’ll just have to wait and see how his performance pans out in the rest of the show. But given the actor’s range and talent and the breadth of the role, he’ll probably kill it. Until then, let the jokes reign.
