Just because Claire and Jamie are getting older in the Outlander books doesn’t mean they aren’t getting it on, according to Outlander author Diana Gabaldon. While speaking with the Seattle Times, Gabaldon got candid about the characters who have been brought to life by Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan onscreen.

Might I add they have both done a fabulous job? Their on-screen chemistry takes our breath away, and that aspect of the characters’ lives isn’t going away as the story progresses.

“If you come out of the romance novel reading tradition and so forth, only people up to about 30 or maybe 35 these days — are at all interesting, because you know, they still have sex,” said Gabaldon. “You can’t have stereotyped old geezers running around doing stuff that 30-year-old people would be doing, but that doesn’t mean what they are doing is pointless or uninteresting.”

And that is precisely why Gabaldon wants to make sure that the steamy lovemaking Outlander has become known for doesn’t end just because the characters are getting older. We’ve seen proof of that in the series, which incorporates time jumps. Their age may be increasing, but their lovemaking certainly hasn’t come to a halt.

Fans love the Outlander love scenes

It’s no secret that fans love to see Claire and Jamie’s intimate scenes, because they share such a deep love for each other.

What I particularly love about normalizing sex scenes for older characters is how it develops them as people. Claire is in her 50s now and we’ve seen her experience menopause. We’ve seen Jamie struggle with old age because he’s just not as limber as he once was. These are all very real issues and I love that Gabaldon and the show explore that.

The best part about the love scenes, however, is how much fans love them. Even Drew Barrymore, who hasn’t even seen the show, feels inspired by them, as she revealed on a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. “I haven’t seen Outlander either but I’ve been dying too,” she said. “I hear it’s pretty good. Maybe tonight, we all spice it up and watch Outlander tonight and circle back on how did it go.”

Yes, Drew, go do that STAT. You have time before the Season 6 premiere on March 6!
