The Boys star Jensen Ackles is developing a secret DC Comics project
By Dan Selcke
Jensen Ackles has had a lot of jobs over the years: he played the character of Jason Teague on Smallville back in the mid-2000s, played Dean Winchester for 15 seasons on Supernatural, and will shortly be appearing as Soldier Boy, a cowardly parody of Captain America, on The Boys. And it sounds like he’s just getting started.
Appearing on Michael Rosenbaum’s Inside Of You podcast, Ackles revealed that he’s currently working with Warner Bros. on a DC project…although of course he wouldn’t say which one. “[T]here is a DC property that I’m currently developing right now with Warner Bros. and some other good partners that I’ve got my fingers crossed for,” he said. “But again, I’m not gonna talk about it, ’cause you don’t wanna jinx it.”
In addition to Smallville, Ackles also crossed over into the DC world as the voice of the Red Hood in the animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood and later as Batman himself in Batman: The Long Halloween. Maybe the new project is something to do with another animated project, or maybe DC is gonna let him take on the role of some iconic hero on the big screen.
Jensen Ackles character on The Boys is “a jackass”
But before that happens, we get to enjoy Ackles as a superhero on The Boys…although none of the superheroes on that show are especially super. Soldier Boy is the first superhero Vought ever created, and Ackles describes him as “a jackass”:
"He’s a grandpa. He’s from the ‘40s. He fought in World War II and he’s just this curmudgeon, bigoted a**hole. And he doesn’t age, so he’s this 40-year-old superhero who’s really 80 or 90 years old. There’s just so much material there and you’ll see what I mean when you see the show, but he has a taste for people that were of his era."
So why haven’t we seen Soldier Boy before now if he’s been around so long? “What happens is — and I don’t think this is any secret, I’m not giving anything away — they kind of find me and I’ve been essentially in captivity for awhile,” Ackles Explained. “And so, when they do, I’m bearded and I look like [Tom Hanks in] Castaway. But then they clean me up and I get my superhero outfit back on and I got to town.”
The Boys season 3 premieres on Amazon Prime Video on June 3. After that, we’ll have to wait and see. “The door is not closed,” Jensen said. “We’ll put it that way … It’ll depend on how it all cuts together. I haven’t seen anything cut together, but I’ve gotten some good feedback from those that need to be impressed.”
