“The wait is over, demigods.” Today, Percy Jackson and the Olympians author Rick Riordan personally delivered the news that Disney+ is moving ahead with a TV adaptation of his book series. Watch it below:

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is about a 12-year-old boy who learns that he is actually the son of the Greek god of the sea Poseidon, meaning he is a demigod with all sorts of latent powers. He goes to a camp where he trains with other demigods.

The story is very much in the mold of Harry Potter, and while the five novels were never as popular as that series, they were still a hit. A couple of Percy Jackson movies came out in the 2010s, although neither went over particularly well with the fandom. The new series will have Riordan on board as an executive producer — he’s also cowriting the pilot with Jon Steinberg — so it will probably be more faithful to the source material.

Percy Jackson Disney+ release date

Steinberg and his producing partner Dan Shotz will oversee the series. “With Rick Riordan, Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz leading our creative team, we’re deep into creating a compelling TV series worthy of the heroic mythological characters that millions of Percy Jackson readers know are well-worth caring about,” said Disney Branded TV president Ayo Davis, per The Hollywood Reporter. “We’re eager to invite Disney+ audiences into stories that are true to the blockbuster franchise and full of anticipation, humor, surprise, and mystery.”

20th TV president Karey Burke is also pretty psyched about the project:

"Bringing Rick Riordan’s brilliant Percy Jackson books to Disney+ as a television series has been a mission for so many of us at this company as well as for Rick himself, and Jon, Dan, James and the excellent team they have assembled have proven to be the perfect collaborators. Thanks to our friends at Disney Branded Television led by Ayo, and Disney Streaming led by Michael [Paull], this will be an adaptation for the ages, with all the excitement, action and mythology fans of the books expect and love."

There’s no release date for the Percy Jackson show as of yet. We’re right at the beginning of this journey.
