It’s the end of an era. Director James Gunn has confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will mark the final adventure for this team of Guardians. The third installment will serve as a farewell for characters like Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Nebula (Karen Gillan), Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Groot (Vin Diesel).

While on The Deadline Podcast, Gunn dropped the reveal and caught us all by surprise. We knew the end would be coming one day, but honestly, I wasn’t ready for it just yet.

“This is the end for us,” said Gunn. The upcoming movie will be “the last time people will see this team of Guardians.”

That said, it sounds like they’ll go out with a bang. “It’s big. It’s so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be,” Gunn said. I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story. That’s always a little bit scary, [but] I’m doing my best.”

Karen Gillan reacts to news about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3

It’s not easy to say goodbye to a team that we have all come to love and adore. No one has made me laugh more than this bunch, and it’s definitely hitting me in the feels that this is the end of the road.

But hey, at least everyone including the deceased Gamora (Zoe Saldana) will be making an appearance. We’ve got Pratt, Gillan, Cooper, Diesel, Dave Bautista (Drax) and Pom Klementieff (Mantis). The whole gang will be back together again, so at least we should be able to get some closure.

It looks like Gillan is taking the news as hard as the rest of us:

Speaking with Collider last month, Gunn revealed that right before Christmas break he gave Marvel some scenes and they were “really happy” and “really, really, really stoked.” And if they’re happy, then you know we’re going to be happy.

Vol. 3 comes out in May 2023, which can’t get here soon enough! But hey, at least we have The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special to look forward to this December.
