40 fantasy and science fiction books you should read in 2022

The Lost Metal by Brandon Sanderson (Wax & Wayne #4) — November 15
Last but certainly not least, we’ll be getting a brand new Mistborn book from Brandon Sanderson this year! This is going to be a big one as it’s the concluding volume of the Wax & Wayne series, the steampunk-flavored second era of the Mistborn series. Previous book The Bands of Mourning saw Waxillium Ladrian, one-time lawman and reluctant politician, accepting all the different facets of his identity and lineage to combat the shadowy organization known as the Set. Things got pretty personal for Wax in the last book, with him coming face-to-face with a figure from his past in a confrontation that the series had long foreshadowed.
But as with any good Sanderson story, the bad guys weren’t truly vanquished in the penultimate volume. The Lost Metal will make good on the mystery of the Set’s benefactor, the otherworldly god known as Trell…who may be somehow related to the wider Cosmere of Sanderson’s works.
The final books of Sanderson series are always chock full of action, reveals, and emotional gut punches. Considering that the last novel in Wax & Wayne came out all the way back in 2016, fans have been waiting an uncharacteristically long time for Wax and Wayne’s last adventure. (It’s not like the author has released two monstrous Stormlight Archive books in that time or anything.)
Nonetheless, of all the books on this list, The Lost Metal might be the ones we’re most excited for. Mistborn and Sanderson always deliver.
