Each month, we read over the latest dispatches from the front lines of the Streaming Wars and assess how the likes of Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+ and the rest are doing. Who won the day, who was defeated, and who’s biding their time? We mark it all down on this living graph, which changes every month.
Welcome to the new year! How did the combatants fare in January of 2022? Take a look:
Paramount+
Paramount+ got new episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy and RuPaul’s Drag Race in January, and…that’s about it. Quiet month over here. Points: N/A
Netflix
New episodes of Ozark and the parody series The Woman In The House Across The Street From The Girl In The Window are the highlights of a quiet month for Netflix, although as usual there’s plenty to watch. But we’ve gotta knock off points for them raising subscription prices… Points: + 1
Disney+
Disney+ got more of The Book of Boba Fett, the streaming debut of Eternals, and…new episodes of The World According to Jeff Goldblum. Yeesh, things are quiet here at the beginning of 2022. Points: + 1
Hulu
Hulu got a ton of library titles this month, but the only big original of note is How I Met Your Mother spinoff How I Met Your Father. And an extra point for putting the entirety of The Golden Palace on there after the passing of Betty White. Points: +2
HBO Max
HBO Max brought in a ton of library titles in January, including Warner Bros. originals like The Dark Knight, Joker and Mad Max: Fury Road. We also got the new series Peacemaker, new episodes of Euphoria and The Righteous Gemstones from HBO, and a Harry Potter reunion special. Finally, someone came to play. Points: + 3
Amazon Prime Video
In addition to a bunch of new library titles, Prime Video brought us George Clooney’s new movie The Tender Bar, another Hotel Transylvania sequel, and the new series As We See It. So not bad, but not great either. Points: + 2
Apple TV+
As usual, Apple TV+ doesn’t have much in the way of new stuff (or any stuff) this past month, but what’s there is pretty good. We get the new movie The Tragedy of Macbeth, the well-reviewed revival of Fraggle Rock, and a new season of M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant. Points: + 2
Peacock
Peacock had several originals debut in January, although the only ones to gain any traction were Supernatural Academy and Wolf Like Me. Add in a bunch of library titles and you have a decent little showing. Points: + 2
