Paramount+ has a whole lot of Star Trek shows either on the air or on the way, but one of the most interesting may be Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This is a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, starring Anson Mount as Captain Pike, who was the captain of the Enterprise in the unaired, original pilot for the franchise. The new show will break from recent Trek series like Discovery and Picard in that it will be episodic, swapping out season-long story arcs for one-off episodes.

The cast and crew just finished talking about the show in a press conference for Paramount+, which also included the debut of some nifty key art. Behold:

That is Captain Pike on his horse as the Enterprise rears above. The poster invokes a frontier spirit combined with the utopian futurism of Star Trek, not unlike the original show all those decades ago.

One of the main characters on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is related to Khan

One of the more interesting tidbits to come out of the Strange New Worlds press conference is that one of the characters on the ship is related to Khan, Captain Kirk’s arch-nemesis from The Original Series and the movies. Folk had noticed that the character of La’an Noonien-Singh (played by Christina Chong) shared a name with Khan Noonien Singh (played by Ricardo Montalban way back when). Sure enough, showrunner Akiva Goldsman confirmed the connection:

"She’s related to Khan, for sure, and, uh, and the deal will unfold…We don’t want to bring folks into the show to be splashy. We want to dig deeply into characters that are part of our ensemble and then, obviously, we’re open to getting our arms … but right now, what you see is what you get."

Does that mean Khan himself will show up? We may find out after Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premieres on Paramount+ on May 5.
