As filming for the eleventh and final season of The Walking Dead continues, we’re beginning to see some behind-the-scenes set photos surface. The latest image sets the scene for a white apocalypse as a snowstorm falls over the Commonwealth army.

We’ve only seen our survivors have to contend with fighting walkers in the snow once before, in the season 9 finale “Storm,” when the group found themselves trudging through thick snow drifts and fighting frozen walkers. The crew turned Georgia into a wintry wasteland at some effort and expense. “The one thing none of us had ever really done was shoot in the snow, and shoot in the snow in Georgia,” executive producer Greg Nicotero told The Hollywood Reporter at the time. “That was by and far the biggest challenge. We ended up spending a majority of the prep figuring out the snow. Ultimately, I didn’t have much time to prep it.”

But as always, when they didn’t need snow, that’s when they got it. While filming the final three episodes of season 11, Georgia just so happened to get a rare, unexpected flurry of snow. Take a look at this cool behind-the-scenes photo taken by TWD’s chief cinematographer Duane Manwiller, who captures the flurry falling over Commonwealth soldiers as they seemingly prepare an attack. “SNOW on the set of TWD,” Manwiller wrote. “In my five seasons of shooting the show this is a first for me….. real falling SNOW.”

If only the team had an actual snowstorm like that when they were filming the season 9 finale. Perhaps they can use the weather to their advantage. We’d all love to see those frozen zombies again, right?

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of Moses J. Moseley

This week, we learned that beloved The Walking Dead star Moses J. Moseley, has passed away. Moseley, who was known for playing one of the walkers Michonne had chained up back when she was first introduced, continued to be a huge part of the Walking Dead family, whether he was interacting with fans online or attending conventions. His presence within the fandom will not be forgotten.

The Walking Dead returns for its next batch of eight episodes on February 20. AMC+ subscribers can watch it one week early.
