All three Spider-Men team up to talk about No Way Home
By Ashley Hurst
Tom Holland! Andrew Garfield! Tobey Maguire! The trio of beloved big-screen Spider-Man actors have finally gotten together — virtually, of course — to discuss their respective portrayals of Peter Parker in Marvel Studios’ latest epic, Spider-Man: No Way Home. The emotion, the nostalgia, the shocks, the action…No Way Home was over two hours of dreams coming true for Spider-Fans.
And now, after abiding by what must be the strictest NDA’s ever written, co-stars Garfield and Maguire have finally broken their silence. The time of denial is over, the time for celebration is here. In No Way Home, their Peter Parkers, also known as Peter Two and Peter Three, are summoned from across the multiverse to assist Holland’s titular Spider-Man in fighting a plethora of classic villains, including Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) and others.
The trio recently sat down with Deadline to chat about the flick for 30 minutes straight. Watch the interview below, and then we’ll cover the highlights:
Andrew Garfield came up with jokes for Spider-Man: No Way Home
Not only was No Way Home the conclusion of Tom Holland’s “Home” trilogy, but it also acts as the ultimate culmination of a generation of Spider-Man movies stretching way back to 2002’s Spider-Man. It turns out that when you’ve got three actors together who know the character so deeply, some lines just write themselves.
“From [Garfield] cracking Tobey’s back to [him] coming up with the idea of pointing at us, it was all stuff that we came up with on the day,” Holland said. “It was just a lot of fun to be able to play with three guys in Spider-Man suits… Sharing it with these boys will be forever one of the most special experiences of my career.”
Interestingly, Maguire revealed that when he was asked to join the project, he didn’t actually understand what his involvement would entail. But the enthusiasm of everyone involved was enough for him to say yes. “In that conversation, the intention, the kind of love and celebration of these movies and what it meant, I think, to [Sony executive Amy Pascal] and [Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige] was apparent,” he said.
"And to me, when artists or, you know, people who are steering the creative process have a kind of authentic, genuine intent of celebration and love, it just was so apparent in both of them, that, I don’t know, I just wanted to join that. And I’m a big fan of Tom and those movies and Andrew. So, it was definitely intriguing, but yes, I was also going, ‘well, what are we going to do? And that was a bit mysterious…I was just grateful every day. Really, it was such a rich experience and, as the guys have touched on, the kind of sharing of something and the brotherhood of it. It was just so rich, emotional."
Tom Holland likes watching people’s reactions to Spider-Man: No Way Home
With Maguire aboard, Andrew Garfield — who claims he would “follow Tobey to the ends of the Earth” — wasn’t far behind. “I’m a lemming for Tobey,” he said. “But that was sincerely a big part of it when I was approached about it, and again, it’s similar to what Tobey was saying. It was like, ‘Oh, the intention feels very pure here. It actually feels like a great creative idea and a great creative story.’”
One of the biggest factors that made Garfield want to return was how thoughtful the script was. The movie could’ve got bogged down in fan service just for the sake of it, but it didn’t. Garfield and Maguire’s Peter Parkers will have a lasting impact on the titular hero. “It wasn’t like they were just asking us to come and say hi and then leave again but actually have our presence being in service to Tom, being in service to Tom’s journey and where he is as Peter Parker,” Garfield said. “And I love the destiny feeling of the multiverse expanding in this film, and actually, without Tobey’s Peter and Andrew’s Peter being present for Tom’s Peter at this very moment, he may not become the Peter Parker that he’s supposed to become.”
Finally, Holland gave his emotional final verdict on the movie. Obviously, any Spider-Man movie is going to have a certain level of success, but this one was different. It was a culmination of seven previous movies. It premiered to an unprecedented level of expectation and delivered everything and more. In fact, Holland is still watching audience reactions on repeat:
"I mean, I always knew that this film would be loved around the world. I didn’t think it would be quite as massive as it has been. One of my favorite things to do at the minute is to go online and watch fans’ reactions to you guys coming in that one scene in particular. I don’t think I could ever have imagined it as being so well received by everyone. I mean, I guess I had an idea that people would love this movie, but in no way, shape or form could I have thought it was going to be as big as it has been."
Spider-Man: No Way Home may take Avatar’s crown as the highest-grossing movie ever
We could listen to those three chat all day, but let’s talk briefly about the numbers No Way Home is pulling in since it’s now passed the $1 billion mark worldwide, becoming the 10th movie ever to do so. That’s super impressive, especially when you take into account the “pandemic era” we’re in at the moment.
Moreover, per Deadline, No Way Home is now the sixth-highest grossing film all-time worldwide… and it hasn’t even been released in China yet.
Standing at $735.9 million, No Way Home is also hurtling towards Avatar’s domestic $760 million box office record.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently in theaters. If the big screen is not your thing, the special edition Blu-Ray edition is rumored to arrive in the Spring. According to insider Amit Chaudhari, it will include upwards of 100 minutes of bonus content.
